We offer tours to Old Believers villages with visits to the local community museum and church and a dinner with a local family. It is a great chance to learn about traditions of the pre-17th century Russia, hear old songs, and try traditional Siberian food.

Old Believers

The Schism in the mid-17th century split Russian Orthodox Church. Followers of the Old Faith fled to different parts of Russia and beyond. Old Belivers of Buryatia trace their roots to the old believer community founded by the escapees in Poland. Exiled to Eastern Siberia by Catherine the Great, Old Believers built thriving communities in Buryatia and vigorously defended their traditions, religious beliefs, and way of life. In 2015, Old Believers of Buryatia celebrated their 250th anniversary of arriving to the lands east of Baikal.
